Across various dioceses in Ghana, it is always heartwarming to watch young men move up through the ranks of the Catholic Church. Seeing them transition from laypersons to the priesthood is a sight that naturally stands out and earns a round of applause from all who witness it. Many shoot for the stars, and many do make the cut. Yet, for every one who crosses the finish line, others fall by the wayside, not because they weren’t up to scratch but simply because life has a habit of throwing curveballs when you least expect them.
What many outsiders often gloss over is that this path is a far cry from a quick six-month Bible school course. It is a gruelling, intense process of character formation that puts candidates through the wringer, shaping them into the image of Christ and helping them get a grip on their emotions. Balancing societal issues, critical thinking, and divine matters over years of rigorous study is no walk in the park; it takes a heavy toll on the mind and spirit.
Let’s not skate over the pastoral integration phase either, where they are thrown into the deep end of community life to learn how to shepherd their flock. This is the stage where they have to put their studies to the test and fall back on good old common sense. Throughout this entire ordeal, they must aspire to stand tall as spiritual giants, steering people toward God rather than blowing their own trumpets or drawing attention to themselves.
The daily grind and hidden hurdles mostly fly under the radar, but the final, remarkable outcome is what everyone ultimately clings to, and that, indeed, is the icing on the cake.
