A GOOD HEART NEEDS BOUNDARIES

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is revealing your weaknesses to the wrong people. You may open up because you trust them, only to discover that what you shared in confidence has become a tool for manipulation. Not everyone who listens to your problems genuinely cares about you. Some are simply learning what makes you vulnerable and how they can use it to their advantage.

From my own experience, one of my greatest mistakes has been allowing people to know how caring I can be and how difficult it is for me to let go once I become genuinely concerned about their welfare. I find it difficult to watch people I care about struggle, especially when I believe I can help. Unfortunately, some people mistake this concern for an obligation and take my kindness for granted.

Before long, you become the person who is always available to listen, help, forgive, and make sacrifices, while your own needs are neglected. Because people know how much you care, they assume you will always be there, regardless of how they treat you. Eventually, what began as genuine concern becomes an emotional burden. Liking someone is not a mistake, nor is caring about their welfare a weakness. However, some people know how to play with your emotions, particularly when they realise how difficult it is for you to walk away.

One thing that particularly troubles me is seeing vulnerable and inexperienced young girls become targets of predators. It hurts when I feel that timely intervention might have prevented something unfortunate. Sometimes, I look back and wonder whether I could have done more. These experiences remind me that caring for others requires not only compassion but also wisdom, vigilance, and the courage to act when necessary.

It is equally painful when people you care about behave as though your time means nothing. They expect you to be available whenever they need you, forgetting that you also have responsibilities and struggles of your own. They mistake your patience for weakness and your generosity for an obligation.

I have come to understand that caring for others should never mean abandoning yourself. You can offer support without making yourself endlessly available, and you can wish people well without carrying all their problems on your shoulders. Sometimes, letting go is necessary to protect your peace.

Not everyone deserves access to your vulnerabilities. Learn to observe people’s actions before trusting them with your deepest struggles. Be willing to open up to those who have earned your trust, but never feel compelled to reveal everything about yourself.

I will say it again: be careful about whom you allow into the vulnerable parts of your life. Some people will treasure your honesty, while others will exploit it. Learn the difference, establish boundaries, and never allow your kindness to become a reason for others to mistreat you. You do not have to become heartless to protect yourself. You simply have to learn that having a good heart does not mean giving everyone unlimited access to it.
