I’ve never been a people person. Big groups exhaust me, and I prefer more often than not to be at ease with quiet and reflection than with noise and large groups. So when I opted to attend a recent Franciscan Youth camp, I didn’t expect it to leave such a wonderful impression on me as it did. But what happened was in no way overwhelming—it was deeply peaceful, spiritually rejuvenating, and wonderfully joyful.
Situated in a serene and quiet environment, the conference was a gentle invitation to God’s kingdom. The Valley of Prayer and Silence in Afrangua was not a disappointment, as it offered a location where grace touched every second.
The program was well structured. Each day began with morning prayers, followed by Communion—a sacred rhythm that grounded us. The meals were eaten in fellowship, which nourished both body and soul. The theme talks offered open-ended discussions on faith, purpose, and what the new year might hold. They made us think not just as a person, but as a fellowship traveling together in Christ.
Of the events, one of the features was jama night—music, dance, and fellowship. And though I’m not particularly enamored with going to the movies, I did attend movie night as a symbol of respect for our Franciscan values. To my surprise, it was a light, fun evening, complete with snacks and popcorn. Beach games introduced laughter and fellowship, and dinner night concluded the evening in warmth and thanksgiving.
If you’ve ever felt nervous about going to a youth event—especially if you’re a more reserved individual like myself—I encourage you to go for it. This year’s camp will be just as beautiful. Come with us at The Valley of Prayer and Silence in Afrangua and feel the wonder of faith, friendship, and quiet happiness.
Let us all enjoy this sacred moment.
