A Week to Remember at Summer Camp

I had the distinct privilege of participating as an animator in one of the annual Summer Camp programs for children, organized by Franciscan Youth Ghana at the Valley of Prayer and Silence in Afrangua, Central Region of Ghana.

The week was a vibrant blend of prayer, catechesis, peer mentoring, quizzes, and games. The children were divided into groups: St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Diego of Alcalá, and St. Joseph of Cupertino (Team Bluey the Cartoon). Team Bluey, my particular favourite, ultimately emerged as the winning team in the competition.

A beautiful sight I observed was the compassionate way the animators cared for the children, the respectful manner in which the children interacted with one another, and their enthusiastic spirit as they cheered each other on. The vibrant energy displayed by the children was truly exceptional. The program itself was wonderful, as evidenced by the children’s active participation and confident responses to questions about their faith.

As I engaged with the children, I observed a remarkable transformation in some of them. Those who had been rather mischievous or withdrawn gradually began to open up and forge new friendships.

The dinner and culture night was another unforgettable highlight. It was an evening brimming with laughter and joy, as the children proudly showcased their unique cultures through vibrant kente, smock, slit, and kaba attire. I wholeheartedly encourage every parent to allow their children to participate in such an enriching experience; you will undoubtedly cherish it. I, for one, absolutely loved it.

My deepest gratitude goes to Franciscan Youth Council (FYC) for granting me this invaluable privilege. Heartfelt thanks are extended to our chaplain for his remarkable dedication and diligent work. And to our wonderfully capable animators, I express immense appreciation for your selfless efforts and insightful teachings. Truly, nurturing and guiding children is a profound and challenging endeavour. My sincere kudos to you all.
