INK AS MY ROSARY—A Poet's Unspoken Words

FOREWORD BY THE POET

“No one knows the beginning of a poet more than the paper and ink he uses.”

I do not say how I feel.

I write it.

I dress my pain in prayers to Mary.

So it looks holy, not heavy.

I make my loneliness rhyme.

So it sounds like a song, not a cry.

People read “Teach us to endure.”

and think I am teaching them.

I am teaching myself.

My poems are not just poems.

They are where I put what I cannot speak.

Each line is a bead I finger in the dark.

When I don’t want anyone to hear me pray.

I am a poet, quiet and small.

Mary holds my words, all in all.

What my mouth is too afraid to say,

My rosary prays for me each day.
